Kenya Floods

George Seda, the police chief inNairobi, said some of the victims were drowned and others were electrocuted. He warned that the death toll may rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Kenya Airways said flights were disrupted, with some diverted to the coastal city of Mombasa, and that disruptions would continue for hours.

The military was deployed to assist emergency rescue services, and the local toll road operator waived fees for an elevated road.

The heavy rain began on Friday and continued overnight, submerging vehicles and forcing motorists in some areas to wade through hip-high water to reach higher ground.

Seda also said that more than 100 vehicles were damaged, with some overturning on the roadside and in parking bays.

Videos of flooded homes and overturned vehicles were shared on social media. Rescue teams pulled out bodies from vehicles that had been washed away.

PresidentWilliam Rutosaid a multiagency team had been deployed to support and relocate those in imminent danger to safer areas as rain continues in the country. He said the government would pay hospital bills for those affected and directed that relief food be distributed to affected families.

A military rescue unit was deployed overnight to support emergency services as Kenya Red Cross response units struggled to reach people in need.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Ahmed Idris said search and rescue teams were working tirelessly to assist those stranded.

"We are severely limited by the traffic and the situation on what used to be roads. We are doing our best to reach those in need," he wrote on X.

Public Service Minister Geoffrey Ruku said he was coordinating national disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. He urged Kenyans to be cautious and prioritize their safety.

Some residents blamed the flooding on clogged drainage systems, stating that city authorities ought to have prepared by ensuring there was functional drainage infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.

One resident, Aisha Bajaber, wrote on X: "The whole city is flooded yet again. How long will officials keep ignoring the lack of drainage?"

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the government would ensure all blocked drainage systems are cleared.

"Nairobi remains a major regional hub and must be kept clean, safe and well-managed to reflect its standing in Africa," he said.

Kenya has faced heavy rains since late February, which marks the start of the long-rains season.

Previous rain seasons have seen flooding, landslidesand mudslides that have left hundreds of people dead and seen thousands of others displaced.

Families with missing loved ones like Nancy Guthrie face ambiguous loss. It freezes grief

Lynette Pino watched in February as news about the disappearance ofNancy Guthrieseemed endless. But she decided she didn't want to get consumed by it.

Savannah Guthrie Mom Missing

Pino has something in common with NBC "Today"co-host Savannah Guthrie'sfamily: Her son, Darian Nevayaktewa, remains missing, too, nearly 18 years after leaving home before a new school year to see his father in Arizona.

"I could see in their faces that they want answers," said Pino, 58, from Tesuque Pueblo in New Mexico. "What's the next step? What can we do? It's how I feel. There are no answers. I just pray for them and the other people who are missing."

"Why," she added, "would someone take an elderly lady?"

Pino and the Guthries are experiencing whatexperts call ambiguous loss.A loved one has disappeared, making it maddeningly mysterious and possibly permanent. Abductions, runaways, certain natural disasters and war can fit the category. So, too, can dementia when family members become strangers.

"They're frozen in their grief. They have a real sense of helplessness," said Tai Mendenhall, a medical family therapist at the University of Minnesota and director of a mental health disaster team. "There's no clear resolution from it. We know from research that ambiguous loss is the most psychologically painful kind of loss because of that."

Pauline Boss is a pioneer in the field and is credited with coming up with the term. In the 1970s, she interviewed women in California whose husbands were missing in action in the Vietnam War. Boss and Mendenhall worked with families after the 9/11 terrorist attack at New York's World Trade Center.

Guthries cope with prayer

Nancy Guthrie, 84, who lived alone, was reported missing from her Tucson-area home Feb. 1. Savannah Guthrie says her mother was "taken in the dark of night from her bed." The FBI released video more than a week later from a camera outside Nancy Guthrie's front door showing amasked stranger. Her blood was found on the porch, but the case remains unsolved.

The odd circumstances and Savannah Guthrie's celebrity as a TV personality have turned the investigation into a major news story. Guthrie hasmade videos, some with siblings Annie and Camron, in which she repeatedly appealed for her mother's release and lately offered a $1 million reward for information.

"As my sister says, 'We are blowing on the embers of hope,' " Guthrie said on Feb. 24, her eyes red.

Guthrie, Annie and brother-in-law Tommaso Cioni recently placed flowers at a roadside memorial at the home. They reached down to read handwritten notes and consoled each other with deep hugs. Guthrie also returned Thursday for an emotional reunion with her NBC colleagues in New York.

She has referred to her Christian faith during the ordeal, asking people earlier on Instagram to "raise your prayers with us" and acknowledging recently that Nancy Guthrie might already be in heaven dancing "with our daddy." It's something that can help people cope with ambiguous loss, experts say.

"When people turn toward their faith, that is where they find solace," Mendenhall said. "Oftentimes the power of faith comes from the communities that inhabit it. Sometimes the best treatment for ambiguous loss is a community group, people who have had this shared experience."

Son's trip turns into mystery

Pino said she regularly turns to prayer as she copes with the plight of her missing son, who was 19 when he vanished in June 2008. Nevayaktewa's disappearance isamong many unsolved casesof violent crime in Native American communities. The FBI last year said it wassending extra agents, analysts and other personnel to 10 states to try to make a difference.

"He wanted to go see his dad on the Hopi reservation in Arizona," Pino said of her son. "I just remember that day hugging him, telling him he only needed a half-semester to graduate from high school. He wasn't there long, maybe a week, before he disappeared. Someone took him somewhere — I don't know. Hard to say."

Savannah Guthrie said her family is donating $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, citing "millions of families that have suffered" with similar uncertainty.

Pino said she prayed and lit candles for Nevayaktewa during a trip to Arizona last summer around the anniversary of his disappearance.

"Do not give up hope," Pino said she would tell the Guthries. "Don't let law enforcement put it aside."

Pentagon taps former DOGE official to lead its AI efforts

WASHINGTON, March 7 (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday named as Chief Data Officer Gavin Kliger, a computer scientist who aided billionaire Elon Musk's ‌efforts to overhaul the government last year and who has boosted white ‌supremacists and misogynists online.

Reuters

Reuters reported last year that Kliger had reposted content from white supremacist Nick Fuentes and self-described misogynist Andrew Tate and made some controversial comments.

Kliger said in an email that he was honored to take on the new role and disputed allegations about his social media posts. "The suggestion that I support 'bigots,' 'extremists,' or white supremacists is categorically untrue," he ‌said.

In a social media post, the Pentagon said Kliger's new role "places him at the center of the Department's most ambitious AI efforts," focusing on "day-to-day alignment and execution of the Department's AI projects, working directly with America's frontier AI labs to support the warfighter."

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for more comment.

The Pentagon's use of AI has taken center stage after a heated weeks-long dispute with Anthropic ‌over guardrails on how the military can use itsAI toolsled to last week's decision by the Trump administration to drop the company and replace it withOpenAI.

On Thursday, the Pentagon gave Anthropic a formal supply-chain risk designation - an extraordinary rebuke by the administration against a U.S. tech company that began working with the Pentagon ‌earlier than its competitors and was more aggressive in courting U.S. national-security officials. But the company and the Pentagon have been at odds for months over how the military can use its technology ‌on the battlefield. This conflict erupted into public view earlier this year.

Anthropic has refused to back down on bans for its Claude AI to power autonomous weapons and mass U.S. surveillance. The Pentagon has pushed back, saying it should be ‌able to use this technology as needed, so long as it complies with U.S. law.

Sweden Stateless Vessel

The Caffa was sailing in Swedish territorial waters Friday under a Guinean flag when officials felt suspicious of the craft, Swedish police said in a statement.

The Swedish Coast Guard boarded the vessel to search it and conduct interviews. Authorities were concerned about its seaworthiness.

Other details about the Caffa were not immediately available.

Sweden last year said it wouldstep up insurance checkson foreign ships in a move aimed at tightening controls on Russia's so-called"shadow fleet" of aging ships. Russia uses its shadow fleet to transport oil and gas or to carry stolen Ukrainian grain. The average age of the vessels is around 18 years, meaning they're near the end of their life span and are more vulnerable to accidents, especially if they're not well-maintained.

The government in Stockholm last year tasked the Coast Guard and the Swedish Maritime Administration with collecting insurance information not just from ships that call at Swedish ports, but also those that pass through the country's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

Authorities have not said whether they believe the Caffa is part of the shadow fleet.

Some of the most severe damage from this outbreak occurred Friday evening in the town of Union City, Michigan, located just west of Interstate 69 in the southern part of the state. Homes along the St. Joseph River were destroyed in the town of about 1,700, left unrecognizable by the killer tornado.

Lisa Piper stood on her back deck and videoed a terrifying scene that played out on the other side of frozen Union Lake as a funnel cloud formed and then dropped toward the ground. Trees were torn from their roots and debris flew into the air.

"It's lifting houses!" she said. As the devastation continued, she exclaimed: "Oh my heart is pounding. Oh, I hope they're OK."

Part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City was damaged, although its nearly 150-year-old grand piano was spared, it said in a post on Facebook.

Michigan gets an average of 15 tornadoes a year, which is much less than the 155 for Texas and 96 for Kansas, according to David Roth, a meteorologist at the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer activated the state's Emergency Operations Center Friday "to coordinate an all-hands-on-deck response to severe weather," she said in a statement.

In Oklahoma, a tornado cut around a 4-mile path of damage in Okmulgee County, some 30 miles south of Tulsa, although more details wouldn't be clear until daybreak, said Jeff Moore, the county's emergency manager.

Some people were injured, although Moore couldn't provide an exact number or their conditions, and large trees were toppled. Power was out for more than 1,600 people, according topoweroutage.us.

"We're just getting everywhere as fast as we can, clearing roads as fast we can," Moore said.

NEED TO KNOW

  • The show makes it clear that while it's inspired by their romance, it's also "dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes"

  • Actress Daryl Hannah, who dated JFK Jr. and is portrayed in the show, called the portrayal of her "untrue"

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessettehas introduced a whole new group of fans to theiconic '90s couple.

John F. Kennedy Jr.(Paul Anthony Kelly) andCarolyn Bessette's (Sarah Pidgeon) relationship is front and center in theRyan MurphyFX limited series, which is inspired by the events of the political heir andformer Calvin Klein employee'spassionate, tumultuous romance.

Some things were transposed from reality to screen: The political heirreallywas responsible for the death ofDaryl Hannah's (Dree Hemingway) dog amid theirsplit, per PEOPLE editor-at-largeLiz McNeiland JFK's former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio's 2024 book,JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography.

But as the showrunner makes clear in the beginning of each episode, certain aspects of the show, including people and events, were "dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes."

Below, here are seven detailsLove Story: JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessettefabricated.

It's not confirmed that JFK Jr. and Bessette met at a fundraiser

While in the show, JFK Jr. and Bessette first cross paths after being introduced by Calvin Klein (Alessandro Nivola) at a 1992 fundraiser, there are varying accounts of how they initially met in real-life.

InElizabeth Beller's biography,Once Upon A Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the author wrote that JFK Jr. met Bessette while he was getting fitted for a suit at Calvin Klein.

"Calvin — along with his wife,Kelly Klein, and ... assistant MJ Bettenhausen — decided it should be [Carolyn], the most effervescent person on the sales floor, who would show John the selection of clothing," Beller wrote. "Unsurprisingly, John came out of the meeting smitten, with a few men's suits and Carolyn's phone number. He called within days."

However,Love Storyexecutive producer Brad Simpson toldUSA Todayin February 2026 that there are different versions of the series of events, but "the most common narrative [of] how they met was at this fundraiser ... so we decided that would be their first meeting."

Bessette didn't necessarily discover Kate Moss

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette in FX's 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: FX

In the first episode of the limited series, Bessette has a big role inKate Moss' modeling break, as sheadvocates for her as the best fitfor the Calvin Klein "Obsession" underwear campaign.

Though this did happen in real life, the scene suggests Bessette "discovered" the British supermodel, but she had actually already begun hermodeling careerat the time.

Moss first walked down the runway in 1992 at the Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan, though she did gain more recognition following the Calvin Klein campaign. (Meanwhile, she and Bessette lived in the same West Village apartment building around that time.)

Daryl Hannah said the portrayal of her is "untrue"

Dree Hemingway as Daryl Hannah in 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette'Credit: Eric Liebowitz/FX

The first few episodes of the series chronicle JFK Jr.'s on-again, off-again romance with actress Hannah. However, she wrote in an essay forThe New York Timesthat the portrayal of her is "not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John."

"The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue," the actress wrote in the scathing essay, which went on to refute several scenes from the series.

"I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties," she wrote. "I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone's private memorial."

Hannah added, "I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis' death to a dog's. It's appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct — and they are false."

JFK Jr. didn't propose to Bessette with his mother's ring

Paul Anthony Kelly and Naomi Watts in 'Love Story: JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: Eric Liebowitz/FX

When JFK Jr. proposes to Bessette in episode 5, he uses his late mother's (Naomi Watts)ring. But in real life, JFK Jr. did not use one ofJackie Kennedy'sringsto propose.

Instead, he gave her a bespoke ring that was designed by his mom's longtime companion, diamond baronMaurice Tempelsman, and inspired by his late mother's "swimming ring."

According toCarole Radziwill's 2007 book,What Remains, JFK Jr. gave Jackie's ring to Bessette as a gift later, which was also echoed in McNeil and Terenzio's book.

"John gave Carolyn two rings. There was his mom's 'swimming ring' - that was Jackie's name for the ring she wore when she didn't wear her wedding ring-designed by Jean Schlumberger," Terenzio said in the book. "Bunny Mellon (Jackie's close friend) had it and had given it to John. Jackie's swimming ring was emeralds and sapphires. Carolyn's engagement ring from Maurice was in the same style with diamond and sapphires around a band."

Their N.Y.C. park fight wasn't about their engagement

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette in 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: Eric Liebowitz/FX

Episode 5 dives into JFK Jr. and Bessette's infamous fight in New York City's Battery Park. While this dramatic and public incident did happen in real life, itsreasoning (and location!) were different.

According to McNeil and Terenzio's book, the couple got into a fight while walking their dog in Washington Square Park in February 1996. After the confrontation was captured by a nearby photographer and videographer, the incident was later published in theNew York Daily News.

While it's sparked byBessette resisting JFK Jr.'s proposal in the show, the real-life fight "stemmed from Carolyn's ongoing complaint that John let people walk all over him," JFK Jr.'s friend Steven M. Gillon wrote in his 2019 biographyAmerica's Reluctant Prince.

Terenzio also noted that in her and McNeil's book, saying that the fight was centered around "him being taken advantage of by his friends" after an incident at a friend's wedding.

Terenzio tells PEOPLE that Berman "would never suggest" something like that in real life.

JFK Jr. and Bessette didn't sleep on the beach the night before their wedding

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette in 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: FX

Love Story's wedding episode highlights the couple's 1996 nuptials in Georgia, but it adds some fictionalized elements to the big day — including them sleeping on the beach the night before.

However, a source tells PEOPLE that they slept at Cumberland Island's Greyfield Inn in separate bedrooms because he "didn't want to see her the night before the wedding" and was "being traditional."

Meanwhile, the bride's hairstylistGeorge Kyriakos toldMcNeil and Terenziothat JFK Jr. had spent that night sleeping on the couch in his and his then-wife Jackie's room.

"It was the whole don't-sleep-with-the-bride-the-night-before-the-wedding thing," he told the co-authors.

The couple spent time apart on the day of the wedding before heading down the aisle, with JFK Jr. enjoying the beach with friends and family — far different from him going skinny-dipping with Bessette on the morning of the big day like he does in the show.
