Nicolás Maduro is the 'legitimate president' of Venezuela, acting leader tells NBC News

Nicolás Madurois still the legitimate leader ofVenezuela, the country's acting president said in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

"I can tell you President Nicolás Maduro is the legitimate president. I will tell you this as a lawyer, that I am. Both President Maduro and Cilia Flores, the first lady, are both innocent,"acting President Delcy Rodrígueztold NBC News' "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welkerin Caracas, in her first interview with an American journalist since taking office.

As her predecessor sits in a federal detention facility in New York after being captured by U.S. forces last month, Rodríguez is now seemingly being welcomed back into the diplomatic fold by PresidentDonald Trump. A high-profile visit Wednesday by the U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright came as the two countries hammered out details of how Venezuela's vast oil reserves are to be distributed.

She added, "I can tell you I am in charge of the presidency of Venezuela, as it's stated clearly in the constitution of Venezuela. And from the amount of work that I have, from how busy I am, I can tell you it's very, very hard work and we're doing it completely day by day."

The daughter of a revolutionary andsanctioned by the first Trump administration,Rodríguez'spath to power has not been conventional.

In the days following Maduro's capture on Jan. 3,Rodríguezwas highly critical of the U.S. military action against him. She has since softened her tone and relented to U.S. pressure and demands, raising the possibility of a visit to the U.S. after two phone calls with Trump.

"I have been invited to the States," Rodríguez told NBC News, adding that "we're contemplating coming there once we establish this cooperation and we can move forward with everything."

Still, the current government has not entirely shed the authoritarian ways of Maduro or his predecessor, the late President Hugo Chávez, who largely established the infrastructure of the current security state in Venezuela.

After being released from prison on Sunday, prominent opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipawas rearrestedand is currently under house arrest, according toa post on Xby his son Ramon Guanipa.

"Ronald Reagan, trust but verify. Trust but verify. We've been dealing with Delcy for five weeks now. It's been an amazing cooperation," Secretary Wright told Welker in an exclusive interview in Caracas on Wednesday.

"She's delivered information. Everything we know so far has turned out to be true. She's made enormous positive changes, including already changing the hydrocarbon law in the country in the first few weeks. So I would say that cooperation is off to a tremendous start."

There has been over $1 billion in Venezuelan oil sold and another $5 billion in oil sales are expected in the coming months, Wright told NBC News.

"So the Venezuelans are in charge here in Venezuela, but the United States has enormous leverage over the interim authorities in Venezuela — the largest revenue source that funds the government, that funds the government of Venezuela is now controlled by the United States," Wright said.

"If they're driving positive change that benefits Americans and is improving the life opportunities of people in Venezuela, that money will flow. If they steer off that path, we have just simply tremendous leverage."

Dozens ofpolitical prisoners have been releasedin recent weeks and political space within the country has opened up to the point where a protest demanding the release of more prisoners was held last week in front of the country's highest court, an act that only months ago could have resulted in arrest, jail time or worse.

The bigger question is when, or even if, María Corina Machado, Venezuela's most prominent opposition activist, can safely return to the country. Despitegifting her Nobel Peace Prize medalto Trump during a White House visit last month, Machado has yet to be fully embraced by the president as a serious political contender in Venezuela.

"With regards to her life, we do not understand why there's such a fuss about it," Rodríguez told NBC News. "With regards to her coming back to the country, she will have to answer to Venezuela. Why she called upon a military intervention, why she called upon sanctions to Venezuela, and why she celebrated the actions that took place at the beginning of January."

Republicans' edge on immigration shrinks as independents balk at Trump's tactics, AP-NORC poll shows

Republicans' edge on immigration shrinks as independents balk at Trump's tactics, AP-NORC poll shows

WASHINGTON (AP) — About 6 in 10 U.S. adults say President Donald Trump has "gone too far" in sending federal immigration agents into American cities, according to a new AP-NORC poll that suggests political independents are increasingly uncomfortable with his tactics.

Views of Trump's handling of immigration — which fell over the course of his first year — remained steady over the past month, with about 4 in 10 saying they approve of the president's approach. But the poll fromThe Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Researchalso found that the Republican Party's advantage on Trump's signature political issue has shrunk since October.

About 3 in 10 U.S. adults trust Republicans to do a better job handling immigration, while a similar share say the same of Democrats. An additional 3 in 10, roughly, don't think either party would do a better job handling the issue, and about 1 in 10 say both parties would handle it equally well.

The Republican president's core supporters remain overwhelmingly supportive of Trump's immigration tactics. But there are signs that more independents think he's going too far.

"I am glad that immigrants aren't just flooding across the border, but what he's doing now in our cities, pitting the military against our people, these are gestapo tactics," said independent Brenda Shaw, a 65-year-old human resources manager from South Haven, Michigan. "They're shooting U.S. citizens in the face and in the back."

The new polling comes as the nation watches the human impact of Trump's crackdown in Minneapolis, where thousands of heavily armed masked agents have descended upon the city to find and remove immigrants in the country illegally.

There have also been numerous violent clashes with protesters, including two U.S. citizens killed by federal agents in recent weeks. About 6 in 10 Americans believe that Trump has "gone too far" when using federal law enforcement at public protests in U.S. cities, the poll found.

Republicans stay behind Trump on immigration

While about 9 in 10 Democrats and about 7 in 10 independents say Trump has "gone too far" in sending federal immigration agents into U.S. cities and using federal law enforcement at public protests, only about one-quarter of Republicans agree.

According to the new survey, about half of Republicans say that Trump's actions have been "about right," while about one-quarter of Republicans say he hasn't gone far enough. Their support for the president hasn't wavered despite the chaos in Minneapolis.

Teviss Crawford, a 20-year-old student from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said he's pleased with Trump's leadership on immigration, although he wishes the president could find a way to deport more immigrants who are in the country illegally.

"I don't think the deportations have been enough, to be honest. I think it's much too lax," he said of Trump's crackdown. "If you crossed into our country illegally, it's just not right. You're taking things away from people who were born here."

Crawford added that Trump "should be focusing on violent criminals, but the violent criminals are probably harder to find."

Independents largely disapprove of the current immigration enforcement approach

Despite their strong support for Trump, Republicans are increasingly alone in supporting Trump on his immigration enforcement tactics.

Trump's approval on immigration appears to have fallen among independents since last spring, from 37% in March 2025 to 23% in the new poll. There is greater variability in surveying small groups, like independents, which creates more uncertainty about the magnitude of changes. About 6 in 10 independents now say Trump has "gone too far" in deporting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, an apparent increase from 46% in an AP-NORC poll in April.

Most U.S. adults, including independents, have an unfavorable view of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly referred to as ICE. Overall, only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have a favorable view of the agency, the AP-NORC poll found.

There is an large partisan gap, with independents much closer to Democrats than Republicans. Only about 1 in 10 Democrats and roughly 2 in 10 independents have a favorable view of ICE, compared to about 7 in 10 Republicans.

"Having the border shut, that's OK. But what Trump is doing with ICE and Homeland Security? You don't go yanking people out of cars. You don't go shooting people," said independent Rick Kinnett, a 60-year-old Navy veteran from Crawfordsville, Indiana.

"I spent eight years in the military. This is not what I signed up for," he said. "This is not what we're supposed to do. This is not constitutional."

Trump's weak numbers hold steady

Trump's approval on immigration has not moved since January despite a month of immigration-related turmoil.

About 38% of U.S. adults approve of Trump's handling of immigration more broadly, in line with anJanuary AP-NORC pollconducted just after the death of Renee Good, the first U.S. citizen in Minnesota killed by federal agents.

The president's overall approval rating has declined slightly since the beginning of his second term and remains low.

Overall, 36% of U.S. adults say they approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency. His approval ratings on the economy and foreign policy are similar to his overall approval and functionally unchanged from January.

Historically, such numbers would push members of a president's party to distance themselves from him — especially heading into a midterm election season. However, Trump's allies in Washington and in state capitals across the nation remain overwhelmingly united behind him, reflecting consistently strong support from Republicans in the polls.

But Trump's immigration approach seems to be a particularly sore spot for independents. While he appears to have slid with independents on immigration, Trump's approval on the economy — the other signature issue where he's recently been criticized for failing to deliver on campaign promises — is similar to where it was last spring.

And the narrowing of Republicans' advantage on immigration is a warning sign for Trump's party. In October, 39% of U.S. adults said they trusted the Republicans to better handle immigration, while 26% said that about the Democrats, giving the GOP a 13-point edge. In the new poll, the difference between the parties is only 4 points.

"What he's doing with ICE is the worst thing right now. I would say the economy is the second worst thing," said Shaw, the human resources manager from Michigan. "I'm getting ready to retire and I'm wondering how I'm going to make it."

"But I'm blessed," she added. "I don't have to hide in the basement because my skin is brown."

The AP-NORC poll of 1,156 adults was conducted Feb. 5-8 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Pakistan court orders medical exam after imprisoned former leader Khan reports partial vision loss

Pakistan court orders medical exam after imprisoned former leader Khan reports partial vision loss

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday ordered authorities to form a medical team to examine imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who recently told his attorney that he has lost roughly 85% of vision in his right eye.

Associated Press

The court order said a medical board must examine him before Feb. 16, according to Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, commonly known as PTI.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said two weeks ago that the 73-year-old former premier hadundergone a brief medical procedurefor an eye condition at a hospital in Islamabad and was in good health. Khan's family has said it was not consulted before he was taken to the hospital.

The Islamabad hospital said in a Jan. 30 statement that he reported reduced vision in his right eye and was examined by a senior prison doctor. Based on the doctor's assessment, the hospital conducted the procedure with Khan's consent.

Khan has beenimprisoned since 2023following his conviction and sentencing in a graft case.

Salman Safdar, Khan's lawyer, reported to the Supreme Court earlier this week that his client had normal vision several months ago but developed persistent blurred vision that was reported to prison officials.

He told his attorney that a specialist diagnosed a damaging blood clot and he has been left with only 15% vision in his right eye due to delayed treatment.

PTI posted a statement on social media saying it condemned the poor treatment for his deteriorating eyesight. The party threatened legal actions and demanded Khan receive immediate and unrestricted access to his personal physicians, specialized eye treatment and transfer to a hospital.

Khan's family and PTI have issued repeated requests to the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to allow family visits and an examination by eye specialists and Khan's personal doctor.

Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, told reporters Thursday that her brother complained of blurred vision for three months, but prison authorities did not act until his deteriorating eyesight prompted a late January hospital visit. She claimed the delay contributed to his worsened condition.

Khan remains a hugely popular political figure in Pakistan despite his removal from office through a parliamentary vote of no confidence in April 2022. He hasalleged that his ousterresulted from a U.S.-backed conspiracy involving political rivals and former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa. The claims were denied by Washington, Pakistan's military and his political opponents.

Halsey Chooses a Sheer Cutout Dress for the 56 Days Premiere

Halseyhas always been a real fashion icon who always knows just how to turn heads. Keeping up with this, she turned the "56 Days" premiere into a full fashion moment, stepping onto the red carpet in a cut-out lacy dress that balanced dark romance with bold edge and risqué fabulousness.

Known for pushing style boundaries as easily as musical ones, she chose a silhouette that played with texture, skin, and structure all at once. The look felt dramatic, bold, and beautiful, with intricate lace doing most of the storytelling, while cut-outs added just the right amount of rebellion.

Halsey turns heads in black outfit

Have a look at Halsey's latest cut-out dresshere:

Halsey made quite a mark at the premiere in a floor-length black gown with sleeveless twist. It also had a deep and alluring neckline with a well-placed cut-out at the chest. This took her outfit to the next level. The body of the dress itself was also sheer and spectacular. Frankly, Halsey's bold black outfit, which had a modern take on the classic fishtail style, was less about safe glam and more about mood, and she undeniably owned every frame of it.
