Jean-Philippe Mateta breaks his silence with 33-word social media message after suffering horror karate kick to the head

Crystal Palace striker Jean Philippe-Mateta has broken his silence after he was on the receiving end of a horror challenge by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Millwall were down to 10-men after just eight minutes of the FA Cup fifth round clash as Roberts was shown a straight red following a VAR review. The 30-year-old may well have been aiming for the ball but both of his feet were way off the ground as his left boot connected with Mateta's skull.

Bournemouth 1-1 Wolves (5-4 on pens): Cherries seal spot in FA Cup quarter-finals in dramatic shootout after Matheus Cunha sees red for a HEADBUTT

Everyone inside the Vitality Stadium could agree on one thing: 'It's not football anymore.' Those were the thunderous chants from both Bournemouth and Wolves supporters as they endured what was almost certainly the longest – and definitely the most farcical – VAR delay in English football history. Players and supporters waited for more than seven minutes as officials tried to work out whether Milos Kerkez or Dean Huijsen had doubled Bournemouth's lead 35 minutes into their dramatic FA Cup fifth-round shootout victory over Wolves.

Crystal Palace 3-1 Millwall: Eagles book FA Cup quarter-final spot after bad-tempered south London derby - as visitors are reduced to 10-men after karate kick on Jean-Philippe Mateta

It was while Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was being transferred to the stretcher after enduring his karate-kicked assault from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts that the away supporters started singing a song so shamelessly sadistic, you had to do a double take. 'Let him die, let him die, let him die,' it went. As if the challenge itself was not grotesque enough – comparable to West Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher crashing into France's Patrick Battiston in the 1982 World Cup semi-finals – the chant only deepened the deplorability.

Emma Raducanu is back smiling on court two weeks after 'fixated stalker' ordeal in Dubai - as Brit prepares to return to action at Indian Wells

Emma Raducanu was seen smiling on court as she prepares to return to action at Indian Wells next week. Raducanu, 22, has not played since she suffered a traumatic meeting with a stalker at the Dubai Open last month. In Dubai, a man exhibiting 'fixated behaviour' approached Raducanu near her hotel, handing her a letter containing his contact details and taking a photo. When the man - who Raducanu has seen several times before - appeared in the crowd at her next match, she burst into tears and hid behind the umpire's chair while he was removed.

England are thrashed by seven wickets as Jos Buttler's ODI captaincy ends in another defeat after disastrous Champions Trophy campaign

England flunked their chance to give departing captain Jos Buttler an emotional send-off as their Champions Trophy encounter with South Africa ended in the same manner as the majority that had gone before: resounding defeat. A little over 24 hours after Buttler announced this would be his 35th and final outing as permanent leader of the one-day team, he left the field at the National Stadium to contemplate being beaten for a 23rd time.
